The SWMI’s workshops

The Workshops are the main places of activity of the SWMI. They bring together members of the five colleges, and, thus, generate original productions. They are also open to professionals who are not members of the association. Their composition is stable, with the same group working on the same subject over a given period of time.

Each workshop explores its chosen topic in its own way, provided that its researches are centred on the notion of work and that they integrate the variety of viewpoints of the participants it brings together.

A workshop allows each of its members to progress in their thinking and produces a tangible object or service (document, film, conference, etc.) useful to others. Finally, it is a place for creating links.

Guidance Council Workshop

Goal

To enrich work-based learning practices and AFEST schemes in particular.

Method

  • Presentation by a reflective practitioner, from the business world, the trade union world, research, intervention-accompaniment & third-party partners;
  • Followed by a time of professional dialogue: a variety of participatory methods are used to encourage reflexivity and mutual qualification of the contributors.

In season 1 (2016-2017) the notions of Learning Work and AFEST were explored

In season 2 (2018-2019) practitioners shared their own experience of conducting AFEST or Learning Work

Season 3 (2020) //An impossible AFEST: how to train for real work? Exploring the tricks of implementing an AFEST

To be found on the SWMI’s Youtube channel:

Season 3

How to deal with the complexities of conducting an AFEST?

The SWMI’s workshop is usually anchored on practical cases and consists of 4 sequences:

  1. Information exchange;
  2. Speaker’s presentation;
  3. Clarification questions;
  4. Work in small groups around a specific question.

Quality of work and performance Workshop

This workshop is a continuation of two experiments carried out in Picardy (SWMI/ARACT/University of Picardy Jules Verne) with about ten managers. These interventions were the subject of an REX (Return of Experience) carried out by the core of the intervening team accompanied by Michel Parlier (ANACT).

Therefore, we have given this workshop the following objectives:

  • Question the notion of « quality of work management », in order to clarify the different dimensions to which it refers (concepts, experiences), and contribute to the SWMI corpus of resources (articles, experiences, researches).
  • To imagine forms of intervention concerning the « management of the quality of work » based on the analysis of work and the setting up of spaces for discussion between employees and management: to reflect on an engineering of intervention which takes into account the transformation of both people and organisations.
  • To define the strict conditions of the SWMI intervention which combines action and experimentation in order to generalise our observations and contribute to the various research projects in the field of quality of work.

Guidance Council Workshop

This workshop is the first of the SWMI workshops. We explore, through a common questioning, the movements that go through us when we work. To construct this multi-voiced speech, we use the method of the double-turn in a recurring way.

This workshop owes a lot to Dominique Fauconnier’s commitment to the SWMI. Here is one of his reflections, in a workshop situation: it gives a fair idea of the quality of what is being worked on in this workshop.

« What I perceived above all was the boundary between what is considered in principle to be a self-image with all the identity-related aspects that are attached to it (and which sometimes block, or can lead to a form of self-judgement) and what can be apprehended in a purely technical manner. I felt that it was possible, in almost all cases, to objectify the observations, perceptions and analyses and that there was, as I perceive it, the possibility of accessing a drier, more ‘workable’ terrain. Work and Digital Workshop

Digital technology redefines the purpose of work as well as its tools, work and its rights, the worker and his or her ecosystem, and material-free work, if not new, is becoming widespread and the source of major cultural, economic and societal issues. Mankind and its work are losing their reference points in terms of time, space, location, and action.

For the past two years, a workshop at SWMI has brought together interested actors to explore, clarify, put into words, identify and project new or foreseeable work situations.

Every 5 weeks, a workshop allows to pool and progressively co-construct a concrete deliverable on a subject determined for the year.

In 2017, a first paper on 10 perspectives on the effects of digital technology on work was written.

Subordination Workshop

The industrial revolution in the 20th century transformed the labourer into an employee. The latter, through his employment contract, is subordinate to the employer.

At a time of the information revolution and the development of self-employed workers, the SWMI is launching a group to reflect and, if possible, act on the issues of subordination at work.

The workshop will analyse the internal mutations of subordination itself, governed by the wage contract. And it will cross it with questions of individual freedom, collective participation and citizenship.

Of course, all of these topics will be addressed from, and through, work as it is today. We hope to produce a reflection that already promises to be original and exciting.

Collaborative Workshop

Implementation of a collaborative workshop by the College Partners

Exploring collaborative work in a COVID and post COVID context

We are pleased to inform you that three sessions of the SWMI Collaborative Workshop of the College Partners will be held.

These three sessions will take place this spring, in conditions which encourage active participation for people who we know are busy, but also passionate about the issues of working together, and who would be delighted to share their experiences and reflections with people working in very different professional environments.

The purpose of the workshop

To explore and deepen cooperation, in other words work in its collective dimension in this particular period. The questions we will be working on are the following:

  • How to articulate physical distancing and cooperation?
  • How can we avoid transforming physical distancing into social distrust?
  • How can we reorganise people to cooperate?
  • How can we facilitate the feeling of belonging to a group and team spirit within the framework of practices that are scattered between distance and face-to-face?
  • How to work and manage in these new spaces and times?
How does the workshop function?

Three two-hour workshops (8:30 to 10:30 in the morning), on 15th April, 20th May and 24th June 2021, by videoconferencing.

Participation requires a commitment to attend all three workshop sessions.

The workshop is, therefore, a stable and motivated group of a dozen actors coming from very different backgrounds to share questions, take a cross-sectional view and feed this place of reflections, exchanges and controversies which is the trademark of the SWMI. The objective is to translate this reflection into an article that can inspire the practices of everyone, and to present the results of our reflections to a large group of professionals, during a 4th session which will be widely open.

Each session will be introduced by a presentation by a speaker, followed by a debate and a comparison of experiences.

A fourth feedback session for a wider audience will allow us to share our thoughts with a much wider circle.

Terms and conditions

Registration by invitation, with a commitment to attend all three two-hour sessions. The size of the workshop group is limited to 12 people. In case of high demand (which is not impossible!), registrations will be taken in the order in which they are received.

Planning and program
